Cyclone Yasi

Between February 2-3, 2011, northern Queensland was hit by a Category 5 cyclone (the highest category for these storms in Australia).

Allunga Exposure Laboratory sustained only some minor damage racks, but samples are safe at all our exposure sites including our high rainfall site at Tully (mould site).

Power and communications

Unfortunately our building was without power or internet services between February 3–9, 2011.

Cyclone Yasi was a very powerful storm. Even though our main site at Townsville was more than 200 km south of the cyclone’s eye, damage was done to the region’s infrastructure.

The state’s electrical and communication staff have worked around the clock to restore power and services over a large area of northern Queensland.

We’d like to ask for your continued patience while our regular operations are being restored.

Finally, we would like to say how much we appreciate all the messages of concern and support we’ve received.

Queensland floods

Allunga was not affected at all by the south-east Queensland floods which took place in January 2011. The closest town affected by floods was more than 700 km to our south, and the most sourthern, more than 2000 km away.
